Among dozens of significant buildings from that era are the Bradbury Building, Ace Hotel Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Examiner building designed by Julia Morgan. It then curves northeast, passing through old railyards, crosses the Golden State Fwy. (I-5) and heads due east to its terminus at Mission Road in Lincoln Heights. Holloway, a Florida native who spent much of his career in Chicago and now lives in Los Angeles, has long worked on integrating deaf and hearing performers — he co-founded Neverbird Project, a theater company for deaf and hearing young people — and one of the characters in “Grey House” is deaf. From Lynchians bursts of blinding light to an endless array of baby dolls — to say nothing of the unexpectedly interactive cubby holes and the frightening pile of men’s discarded shoes — Mantello sets a spooky table for his cast.

When a couple crashes their car in the mountains, they seek shelter in an isolated cabin. Its inhabitants, though somewhat unusual, are eager to make their guests feel right at home. But as the blizzard outside rages on and one night turns into several, the couple becomes less and less sure of what's true—about their hosts, themselves, and why that sound in the walls keeps getting louder. And the show’s fine cast and creatives do their best to make it all less impenetrable. These raw-knuckled riddles are what drive Holloway’s challengingly experimental meditation on the predestination of pain. For while the playwright has provided notes about grieving children who died horrible deaths at the hands of men needing love, those ideas filter into “Grey House” with more poetry than specificity. The drearily in-between shades of gray here represent a purgatory, a waystation between Heaven and Hell.

Following in the long legacy of queer artists who write themselves into American history, Escola’s new “gay fantasia on national themes” is a hilarious reminder of why we must continue to interrogate our past. When it comes to the acting prizes, Merrily We Roll Along's Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Menendez each earned nominations for their respective performances. Earning the most of any production, Hell's Kitchen and Stereophonic came out on top, with a total of 13 nominations each, followed by The Outsiders with 12. Additionally, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and Merrily We Roll Along were the most recognized revivals of the year, collecting 9 and 7 nominations, respectively. Theatrical devices inevitably pall, but a powerful message ensures longevity. Though the history of “Cabaret” indicates some progress toward understanding and acceptance, the musical’s warning about the temptations of fascism, nationalism and prejudice — the way they can sneak up on you when you’re having fun — has never seemed dated or irrelevant.

From around 1905 through the 1950s, Broadway was considered the center of the city, where residents went to ornate movie palaces and live theaters, and shopped at major department stores and shops. See the Table of department stores on Broadway and Seventh streets below. Emmy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated for her starring role in Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany proved her ability to effortlessly play multiple versions of the same character for five seasons on the series.

The Drama Desk Awards, recognizing the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway, is one of several NYC theatre awards systems to go gender neutral with its performance categories. All performance categories include twice as many nominees as when the categories were gendered, and two winners will be named in each. Sally, although she plays a relatively minor role in “The Berlin Stories,” seized readers’ imagination from the outset.
Needy, untalented, reckless, manipulative — but highly entertaining — she may be the model for the movie stereotype film critic Nathan Rabin dubbed the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Isherwood was gay, but while he was writing “The Berlin Stories” in 1930s and 1940s he couldn’t very well admit that. He disguised the truth in a murkily doomed romance between the narrator and Sally. It was the first time major retail stores opened on South Broadway, in what would be a shift of the upmarket shopping district from 1890 to 1905 from around First and Spring to South Broadway. In 1904, Coulter's bought the Potomac Block, and combined it with the Bicknell block to create its new store that opened in 1905. The Poundcake Hill buildings originally backed up to Broadway to their west, and faced New High Street to their east.
Off-Broadway's Dead Outlaw is continuing its dominance of this year's theatrical honors, earning the most nominations of any production up for this year's Drama Desk Awards. Nominees were revealed April 29 on NY1, with Broadway's The Outsiders getting the second most nominations. He describes the production as an “artistic quest” that had “nothing to do with money,” and that was good because despite its popularity the show was “negative money,” he says. After Mendes bowed out, Haimes asked Marshall, who had choreographed Roundabout’s “She Loves Me,” to direct and choreograph the production; he agreed. The 77th annual Tony Awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, June 16, with Ariana DeBose returning to host for the third time.
